1XV Match vs Nayland College 1XV

Our first venture into the South island began with a tight match against a well organised Nayland College.

It was an outstandingly slow yet energy sapping start to the game as there were no scores and hardly any breaks in the game due to a chilled out style of reffing. Until there was a break through by our life size Jonah, Lawrence Okoye. He recieved the ball 10 metres out and saw a scrawy winger shaking in his boots and therefore he decided to trundle over the top of him and embaress him in front of his entire school. Nayland however responded strongly and applied a lot of pressure onto our covery defense but we stuck at it and Marland Yarde found a gaping hole which had to be punished and he did so accordingly with a great solo effort. This try was then suitably finished with a conversion from Rob White. The game progressed and Nayland managed to snatch back two tries to make the score 12-12 before Lawrence crashed over for another two tries rounding up a nice hat-trick. We went into half time with a satisfactory lead yet feeling slightly deflated at the way we played.

The second half began with Nayland crashing through our mediocre defense to keep themselves in the game. Then the pressure was applied on us and although the defense at times struggled, we managed to created a faultless move off a scrum to end up in a 60m try for stand in centre Marland Yarde. Our defense and attack started to regather and look as if we were dominating. The move starting with a phenomenal run from Harry Williams splitting open the close ruck defense and offloading well and the ruck being set up. This passage of play then continued for a moment or so until Rob white managed to pick out their fastest winger with an interception allowing him a free run under the posts and an easy conversion. Eventually we regained some dominance and Jack Valler blasted over from the back of a well executed driving maul. However some sloppy defending left Nayland with a last minute attempt to snatch the game as their winger sliced through and scored in the corner. All down to the conversion, the ball went up and looked as though it was going over until it hit the post and bounced off to leave us with a 32-31 victory.

A special mention must be given to Harry Williams for his great efforts in the scrums and in open play taking many balls off the breakdown. Also the waterboy Charlie Hopkins did a sterling job and the team were never left asking for a drink.

Day 12

After an eventful night, we said goodbye to our billets leaving Nelson at 9am instead of 8:30am because of Harry, PJ and Yeboah's poor time keeping (Serious Fines) . It was a great sunny winter's day and after an hour and a half of travelling we stopped for refreshments at a tranquil but deserted location.

We experienced the best mountainous landscape that New Zealand offers and with that we had an excellent sing song on the coach. A certain Chris Wilkins with his amazing voice was the highlight of the 5 hour coach journey singing songs like 'American Pie' and 'Use somebody'.

We arrived in Christchurch at about 4pm where we were introduced to our next set of billets.

The lads are now preparing themselves for a fun weekend with their billets knowing that a tough test match VS Shirley Boys School on sunday afternoon is awaiting them.

Day 11

We woke up to another beautiful winters day here in Nelson, which the locals assured us was just an average day, but the sun was shining, and everyone was looking forward to another great day of rugby!
Everyone returned to Nayland in the morning with the usual excitement of sharing stories about their billets, and we all headed into Nelson for a mooch around the shops, and a chance to relax ahead of the upcoming matches. The wind was due to pick up a little bit in the afternoon, but as the sun shone, it felt like a spring day, and to play rugby on a firm pitch, overlooked by the Great Western Ranges, the scene was set for two great games!

Day 10

It was time to say farewell to our hosts at Paraparaumu college this morning after a light training session. Training was harder for some than others, as was the saying goodbye, as some of the boys had been working tirelessly at developing international relations with certain members of the college (netball team)!
We staked our claim to the majority of the top deck of the ferry from Wellington to Picton, and were glad that the strong winds of the previous day had subsided, as it made for a calm crossing. The ferry journey was not only a means of travelling from the North to the South Island, but an absoulutely unforgetable cruise through some of the most picturesque scenary that you could hope to see. Having left the rolling green hills of the North Island, we are now surrounded by much more imposing mountains, many capped with snow, and still only a taster of what is still to come as we travel further south.
We arrived at Nayland College in Nelson in the evening to meet our new hosts, and tucked in for an early night in preparation for the next game the following day.
George Smith's Sister, Izzy who is part of the group of supporters here with us in New Zealand celebrated her 18th birthday today, was also looking forward to a great night to follow an amazing day.

Result: Lost 5 - 63

Would you believe that we were 5 - 19 down at half time, against one of the best sides in the south Island. Beautiful day, and beautiful weather, but terrible result! We worked hard, and had a fair amount of possession, but the clinical finish and one on one tackling let us down. What more can I say!!
Elliot Mack was quite literally superb. Jonny McMillan and Chris Campbell continue to lead the troops. It's tough down here, and some of us are up for it, and some of us are not. The support is, as always, incredible. NEVER TAKE A BACKWARD STEP. We move on, keep our heads high!
The 1st XV are winning, so let's jump on that bandwagon! Carpe Diem.

U15 Match Report V Paraparaumu college

On the 27th July the Whitgift U15 tean played Paraparaumu college. It was a fine day with good conditions and Whitgift got of to a bad start with Paraparaumu getting two penalties. But through grit and determination Whitgift came back with a try from Greg Westcott but Matt Clarke convert. But Whigift discipline let us down again and the opponents kicker converted it makeing the score 9-5. But out on nothing Fritz Kirchner started an amazing run through the paraparaumu team and scored the best try on the match so-far Matt Clarke converted. Then the oppositons disipline let the down and whigift got two more penalties which Matt clarke converted makeing the score 9-18 to whitgifts favor ,but the home team did not give up and scored again to set up a good second half for all spectators.

But unfortunatly the Paraparaumu team pulled themselves together and they seemed to keep on scoring allthough a pitchlong chase from George Smith stopped the opponents from scoring.
whitgift eventualy lost 26-20. whigift have alot to work on and we should try to think of the positives ,which will help us in our games in the south island.

Day 9

It was another early start in the land of the long white cloud. The boys arrived at school sore after two hard fought games with a fresh group of stories from their billets ready for a day sight-seeing in Wellington. Unfortunately Jamie Stevenson was suffering with a cold and so stayed in bed in order to recover. After a short but tuneful bus ride we arrived at the headquarters of NZ Rugby where one of the Paraparaumu parents worked and had kindly arranged a tour for the boys. We were shown around by former all-black Brent Anderson and the group got the opportunity to have photo's with the Bledisloe and Tri-Nation's trophies as well as the Edmund Hillary Shield. They also had a unique opportunity to see the inner workings of a highly organised and well run professional sporting environment.



Following this the group moved on to the Westpac Stadium, better known to some as the Cake Tin Stadium. It became apparent early on that the guide was intent upon giving us a detailed personal history rather than an informative tour. As intertesting as details of the New Zealand state pension, the guide's marriage and recent holidays were the boys lost interest after a while and the comedy set in, there were a few notable questions that raised an interesting response!

Once we had escaped from 'Stinky Pete' the tour guide the boys were given some free time to have a look around Wellington. It really is an amazing place with a beautiful harbour and some amazing colonial buildings, it also has a really relaxed and friendly atmosphere that all the tour party appreciated. After purchasing some Hurricanes stash the boys returned to the coaches and we set off back to Paraparaumu to return to the billets for their final night's stay on the North Island.

The boys returned to school in the morning for a training sessions. Both sets of coaches had lots to work on and sessions were intenses and successful. They also seemed to impress the girls of Paraparaumu College as there were a few photo's being taken, a first taste of press intrusion for a few of the boys!

Showered and changed the squad are about top make their way to Wellington for the ferry crossing to the South Island. It has been a great stay up North with some good tough rugby played, long lasting friendships made and tour bonds cemented. A fond farewell to Ben and Brian the drivers who have served us so well and we look forward to seeing the sights of the South Island and turning over some more Kiwis in their own back yard!

Whitgift 1st XV v Paraparauma

Our third game in the North Island brought us to Paraparauma, a small town about 40 minutes away from Wellington the country's capital. Generous weather conditions and a seemingly flawless playing surface set the scene for a fantastic game of rugby and fortunately we were able to live up to the occasion.

Whitgift started brightly, with Jack Munnery charging down the attempted clearance of the opposition fly half in the fist minute, then collecting to score his second try of the tour and thus equal his try count for the whole of the 2008-09 season! Rob White converted leaving the score 7-0 after 2 minutes of play. Rob was able to push Whitgift further in the lead a few minutes later after a penalty for offside. Continued pressure culminated with Tommy Nicholls darting over the try line for the second score and after Rob's third successive kick Whitgift were 17-0 up.

For the rest of the half Whitgift produced some outstanding backs moves and some formidable scrummaging to cement their lead in the game. Rob White was able to add to his personal tally with a try in the left corner in the latter stages of the half and therefore take the score to 22-0. Paraparauma were limited to just one venture in our 22, with which they left with 3 points. The half time score was then 22-3.

We started the second half poorly allowing them to score a try through a disorganised defensive line, moving the score to 22-8. Shortly after that terrible start however, we were able to show our attacking flair. Will Smith on the left wing was the best attacking option of the afternoon, using his pace to beat his opposite winger and midfield players time and time again. It was his break off a well-executed backs move that led to James Canty's try. The effort was again converted by Rob leaving the score at 29-3. Soon afterward two penalties from Mr White from 40 and 30 metres respectively took Whitgift to 35 points.

Jack Valler scored a bulldozing try from an eight pick-up to rouse the crowd and a sweeping team move allowed captain Charlie Hopkins to also score. The last try of the game was scored by Sam Cornford after a 60 metre run from Mr Valler, leaving the final score at 50-8.

An outstanding performance by the Whitgift team, with noticeable efforts coming from Mr Smith, Mr White and Mr Valler. We must take forward the positives from the North Island and use them to take on the tougher challenges in the South. Paraparauma were not the strongest team, but Whitgift still had to do the job and they did it very well.

Day 8

We awoke in our billets house (Yeboah in his caravan) after a quiet night for most. Apart from a few who decided to emerse themselves in the joys of ten pin bowling! as we met at shcool at 8.00 we were all aprehensive to see how we would be spending the six hours before the game. The staff arrived in the coaches from their hotel and took us all to the beach for a few hours of free time. Guy Newman and Eduard Peglau decided although it was near 5 degrees outside it would be a good idea to go for a swim. Eddy managed to get in up to his ankles before he decided it was too cold and he was too soft! Guy on the other hand managed to trip over and fully submerge himself. As Guy returned shivering he realised that all of his clothes had been stolen by his fellow team mates. After an eventfull hour in a childrens play ground we all reutrned to the college to get ready for the big game ahead of both teams.

Day 7

After waking with some slightly sore bodies and very well rested, the whole squad met back at Lindisfarne College. It was great to see all the boys having had some fantastic billets and the generosity of the families has been nothing short of staggering. From quad biking to pheasant shooting the whole squad clearly had an experience never to forget.

Indeed the talk of the party the night before was hot on the lips of all those attended. As we settled into our coach journey down to Paraparaumu, we began to see what New Zealand really has to offer. As we passed vineyards and beautiful mountain scenery, interspersed with tiny rugby clubs, it was noticeable how the front rows of the coach soon began to nod off whilst Mr Wilkins explained in great detail the benefits of each grape variety.

With some lively singing on both coaches it was great to see the whole squad in good spirit as we headed south for our next challenges. As we drove through Palmerston North, we stopped for some local culinary delights (aka McDonalds for most), and hopped back onto our bus for the final part of the 3 1/2 hour journey to Paraparaumu.

As we arrived at the College, the boys we successfully billeted all ready for tomorrows game. Despite a few coughs and colds, all is good. Stevo is recovering, Declans shoulder is getting less sore, and Tom Andrews has found his blazer, wallet and match shirt.

Whitgift 1st XV vs. Lindisfarne

On another sunny yet cold afternoon in Hastings, the boys returned from evenings with their billets to face a strong and physical Lindisfarne 1st XV. The Haka began and the boys clearly began to get zoned in to the task in hand. They stood strong and 2 minutes later were ready to face the kick off.

James Wilkies kick off was followed up by Tom Archer who put in the first big hit of the game, which was to dictate the physicality to come. From the resulting ruck the ball was kicked clear by Lindisfarne's captain and no.10 which gave the Whitgift boys a chance to attack. We looked dangerous in attack in the backs with, again, good strike moves however nothing came from the first attack. The boys then forced an early penalty within kicking range, which James Wilkie pushed just wide. Lindisfarne then responded by winning themselves a penalty around 22 yards out which the captain also kicked wide. At the score still 0-0, Lindisfarne's back line put into play an impressive strike move which tore through the Whitgift defense and saw the no.15 bursting through a gap to score the first points of the match. The conversion was good.

Next, Whitgift pushed on and made valuable territory. This payed off when Tom Nicholls executed a successful "coke" to see Marland scoring under the posts after his trademark sidesteps. The conversion was solid. This drew the score to 7-7. As the physicality of the game escalated, more and more arguments began and after a minor incident (very minor in comparison to some other incidents) the referee saw Charlie Hopkins' shove to a Lindisfarne player enough to take 10 minutes in the bin.

The game remained in the balance until just before half time as a deep kick came over into Whitgift's half from the captains right boot which put pressure on the left winger Will Smith. Lindisfarne were up suddenly and Will's kick was charged down well, the loose ball was pounced on by a player in red and the try was given. The conversion was no good, bringing the score to 12-7. The half time whistle blew and the players huddled in.

Shortly after the whistle blew to begin the second half Eddy Peglau came off the field having once again hurt his left shoulder. However this injury is not serious and after some ice and treatment he should be fit to play on Monday. At this stage replacements came on to the field. Rob White replaced Julian at inside centre and shortly after Lawrence replaced James Wilkie and pushed James Canty to the wing. Finally Jack Munnery replaced Will Smith as he went into outisde centre pushing Marland out to wing.

After this the Lindisfarne captain pushed through a cheeky grubber kick which was recovered leaving Whitgift's last line of defense on the back foot which lead to Lindisfarne's third try. The conversion was good bringing the score to 19-7. The substitutions proved valuable as Jack Munnery made a definate impact, darting through the Lindisfarne defense using quick feet to force another Whitgift try bringing us right back into the game with the score at 19-14 after Tom's solid conversion. From then on out the boys gave it all in an attempt to claw back the crucial points however Lindisfarne attacked quickly on the counter and as Marland found himself in a very difficult 3 on 1 position down the wing he was unable to stop Lindisfarne scoring the fourth and final try. The conversion was missed however this didn't matter as seconds after the final whistle blew. Ending the game 24-14.

The boys we're gutted to have lost however left with valuable feedback crucial for our game on Monday and with our heads held high.

WHITGIFT U15 VS LINDISFARNE

On Saturday 25th July the Whitgift U15 team ran out onto the pitch full of confidence from their recent victory against Dilworth College. Lindisfarne performed their own version of the 'Haka' and then the game began. At first both teams were very equal, with Whitgift having slightly more possession and territory. A great run from Charles Gutteridge suddenly broke through the opposition line but was just tackled inside their '22'. Following this was Harvey Hanifan who got brought down having made good distance for the team. However despite Whitgift constantly threatening to break through, the first two scores came from Lindesfarne, following some good play and breaking through the tackles. The half-time score was 12-0.

The 2nd half began with Whitgift trying to make a come-back like against Dilworth, but against th run of play, Lindisfarne unfortunately scored again. 5 minutes later and again whitgift had a scrum inside the opponents '22'. The No 8 pickup worked and Chris Campbell ran through the Lindisfarne line to score next to the posts. Matt Clark then converted. After this Lindisfarne scored twice more, before Rory Mccall paced it down the wing to score in the corner. From the difficult angle the conversion missed.

The final score was 31-12 against a well-drilled Lindisfarne team. Good performances came from Harvey Hanifan, Charles Gutteridge, and John Macmillan led from the from as always. In the presentation afterwards, the Lindisfarne player of the match was Will Page, who gave a solid performance at full-back.

Day 6

As we awoke from a short but well needed sleep, for some ! (ranging from hunting trips to relaxing in the hot tub), we reached the lindisfarne school grounds ready for a good game of rugby.
It was a slow and steady morning and warm up, with the lindisfarne second XV playing a local friendly game prior to our two fixtures. These fixtures, unluckily, ended with unfortunate losses for both teams, mainly due to a lack of mental fitness.
After the match we all got cleaned up and had a short presentation in the dining halls of one of the schools houses, and to the our joy a spot of lunch. after this we quickly returned to our billets to get showered and changed before going out; the under 15's had a night of local recreation and entertainment with their billets, while the 1st XV had a more wild night in store, with what only can be described by the boys as "the best pre-lash in the world" and a spot on the guest list at a very exclusive, local, 18 year old birthday party.

So all in all despite the losses, it was a good day.

Day 5

Day 5 and we woke up to the same smell as we went to bed with!!! After a fantastic night at the Maori village and what was probably the coach journey of the tour so far back to the hotel, we awoke to a trip to the Polynesian Spa and a warm revitalising soak in the baths overlooking the lake. The party then loaded the coaches and in good spirits headed for Taupo for lunch. After a hearty lunch we continued through some fantastic scenery although the majority of the party were inspecting the inside of their eyelids instead of seeing the mountains, plains and gorges of Hawkes Bay. After 4hrs we arrived in Hasting at Lindisfarne College where we were met by some old friends from Whitgift and our 15 year association with the college. Indeed we are going to welcome them to South Croydon in only a few months. (Any parents reading this your help would be appreciated.). Arriving in the rain both squads trained for an hour and a half before the boys dispersed with their billets. A good day and match 2 tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

Day 4

It was an early start for day 4 as today we left Auckland, Dilworth and the Kingsgate Hotel for Rotorua. The morning was rushed with us having to repack our bags and have breakfast before 9. First call was to Dilworth School to thank them again for their tremendous hospitality and kindness. We then all boarded the coaches for our journey to Rotorua which took us a good three hours. Throughout the journey we saw snippets of New Zealands fantastic landscape. At 2 o'clock we finally arrived at the Park Gate Hotel which for many was a shock. We were pleasantly suprised on arrival at Park Gate as our rooms were even more luxurious than before. Result.

After settling in, the tour party headed to Te Puia where we witnessed Maori cultures in craftsmanship, belief and society. At the site we also saw the magnificant mud springs and geysers however the mud springs didnt smell delightful.

For this evenings dinner and activity we visited the Tamaki Maori Village where we extended our knowledge and understanding of Maori cultures and traditions seeing song and dance including the famous Haka. Part of the culture of the Maori's is that you select a chief for your group. This chief was me Jonny Ellis and this experience will be a part of me for the rest of my life. It was a fun filled evening which ended in wondrful food and a good laugh.

Tired the boys returned to the hotel for a good nights rest to prepare for the coming days.

Day 3

Matchday. Early start, people focused ready for a massive first tour game. The team is pretty excited and prepared. We left the hotel, Ipods in ears ready to pillage and burn. And that we did with a massive win over a tough Dilworth side. The boys were really excited after the victory as we sung "In the air Tonight" (Phil Collins) in the dressing room which our bus wants to make our tour song! The backs moves were looking slick and it was nice at the after match dinner looking at all the Dilworth faces who were clearly disappointed. However we got on really well with the opposition despite a tough and hard fought match. After the lunch we returned to the hotel for the first Tour Court which took place under Judge Kibble. He began by charging Mr Richards AKA Shambles for a series of offences as well as charging a number of boys. They were told they had to sing at the dinner with Dilworth however we were quickly informed that singing "Happy Birthday" in Welsh was hardly appropriate at such a formal occasion in front of the Dilworth Headmaster and Chaplin! Socialising with the opposition was enjoyable and once again the food was tremendous and thoroughly enjoyed. It was amazing to see just how much the New Zealanders ate. I was informed of how they didn't even go to the gym but were that huge! The day ended with a good night out for the seniors in Auckland Town Centre with the birthday boy Eddy Peglau really enjoying himself. A great night after an awesome win and although we're not feeling so great now, it was well worth it!

U15 Match report v Dilworth

On Wednesday the 22th, the U15 Squad played Diilworth school. Afyter facing the Haka, the team was very pumped up and rearing to go. In the first few minutes, there was great intensity between rthe two sides, however after some strong maulinmg, Dilworth managed to scorew convering the try. After several minutes of intense play, Dilworth managed to break through our back-line making the score 12-0. Then Whitgift fought back hard and scored through a skilful little grubber from Matt Clark. 'Rumble' Rory slid in and touched the ball down to score! Mathew Clark unfortunately missed the conversion from the touchline, however Whitgift were ready to hit back. Whitgift then tackled fiercly and stole the ball by some nice counter rucking, which consequently led onto another try, thanks to the forwards and Rob. Mathew Clark converted to make the score 12-10.

In the second half Whitgift were awarded a penalty for offside and Mathew Clark converted. Whitgift were now in the lead and in the ascendancy. Short after Charles Gutteridge and Mathew Clark again converting. After a scrum and a number 8 pickup and some skillful running by Chris Campblel Whitgift scored again! George Smith conveted a hard tick from the touchline. Dilworth mangaged to score again before the end of the match. However we won 29-19, a great start to the tour.

1st XV vs Dilworth Match Report

On a sunny New Zealand day Whitgift faced Dilworth School from Aukland. Soon after the teams ran out Whitgift lined up on the half way line to face the Dilworth Haka. Both teams stood right in eachothers faces as the atmosphere built.

Dilworth kicked off the game, but the kick went straight out, a good omen for Whitgift perhaps. From the resulting scrum the ball was moved to the right to Max who burst past the first line of defence and chipped over the full back only for the ball to run into touch before he could reach it. This gave Whitgift the confidence to continue attacking. From the strong Whitgift scrum lead by Harry, Jonny and Yeboah the ball was moved into centre field where Julian made a good break offloading to Rob who gave the final pass to Chris who beat the scrambling defence with a good dive to score the first try on 9 mins. The conversion was pushed wide.

Whitgift continued the good attacking play for the next phase of the game eventually being rewarded with a penalty on the Dilworth 10 metre line which was struck sweetly through the posts by Rob. The team was lifted by this and of the following kick off good linking play from the scrum half and forwards saw Harry making a half break offloading to Matt Hilton who showed good pace to get away from the defence until being brought down by the Dilworth full back. Unfortunatly the ball was turned over from here and cleared downfield by Dilworth. The resulting Whitgift lineout was lost and some good handling from Dilworth saw the ball moved wide before being switched back inside and run in for Dilworth's first try. The conversion was missed.

At this point the tide seemed to turn as Dilworth took hold of the game. On 22 mins they scored their second try making it Whitgift 8, Dilworth 10. The conversion was missed. Only a few minutes later Dilworth had scored again after making a good break through the middle of Whitgift's defence to score under the posts. This time the conversion was good, making the score Whitgift 8, Dilworth 17 at half time.

The second half started with Dilworth still seemingly in control with the majority of possesion but they made little headway into the strong Whitgift defence. Their only chance came through a half break down the left wing which was quickly shut down by Tom who lead the team well in the line outs throughout the match.

Dilworth slowly lost their hold on the game soon after this after a few Whitgift subs helped to raise the tempo of the game. Marland, Tom, Sam and Charlie came onto the pitch and soon after a good kick from Tom was well followed up with a big hit from Marland and the ball was spilled. From the resulting lineout Charlie impacted almost straight away with a big run up the centre of the field. From this a good move to the left of the field saw marland breaking the line and feeding lawrence for the try in the left corner on 48 mins. Rob struck the ball through the posts from out wide making the score Whitgift 15, Dilworth 17.

From here Whitgift took control of the game, training had paid off as the backs moves that had been worked on resulted in a further score for lawrence again in the left corner, the conversion was made once again making the score Whitgift 22, Dilworth 17. However Whitgift were not content to sit back on their lead. They continued attacking well and when the ball was moved into space on the right side Marland stepped his man and used good pace to sprint under the posts for the try. The conversion was good making the score Whitgift 29, Dilworth 17.

From there Dilworth tried hard to fight back and their best opportunity came from a scrum deep in the Whitgift 22, but they couldn't make anything of it as the ball was turned over and cleared. In the dying moments of the game Dilworth attacked hard but there was little they could do to get through the defence, eventually they knocked on and the game ended.

Day 2

First night in Auckland. All boys were incredibly tired. Probably the easiest anyone has got us to bed in years. Most of us in bed by 8:30. A lovely long sleep later and most boys were up by 9. Breakfast was tremendous, full fry up much appreciated by a group of big hungry lads!

Off on to the bus at 10 and back to Dilworth for training. Both teams trained well in the rain in preparation for tommorow (have you seen the forecast!). After a good session only cold showers were available, the opposition treating us in style. After this into the dining hall for another grand lunch provided by Dilworth. The boys are definatly appreciating these, everything is done on a large scale eating wise over here. Massive chicken pies avec potatoes. Perfect after training grub.

Stopping off at the hotel to collect some things before heading off downtown to Auckland for a shopping spree (you will be glad to know that nobody broke the bank). We spent a couple of hours there exploring the surroundings before returning back to the hotel for a couple of hours. Tonight we are going back to Dilworth for what i am sure will be another massive meal and some time with the opposition. I'm sure the boys are looking forward to seing the size of the boys we are up against tommorow.

Arrival in Auckland.

We finally got the long awaited tour underway when meeting at Heathrow at 6pm, 18th July. The flight began at 9pm and we prepared ourselves for the long haul and the competition that awaited us. With a long 11 hour stretch behind us we arrived in Hong Kong for a brief 2 hour stop where the boys re-fuelled and anticipated the next flight. A slightly shorter 10 and a half hour stretch finally finished the job and the true tour began with our much anticipated morning arrival in Auckland.

Upon arrival we immediately headed to Eden Park stadium and viewed what is surely going to have massive sway in the coming 2011 Rugby World Cup. We viewed the changing rooms and then had a walk out onto the pitch seeing what it would be like to face the crowd at the highest level. With a team picture taken and a short walk around the stadium's museum we headed off the Dilworth School.

Dilworth provided us with our lunch and tea, and so received the boys' and coaches' thanks and apprecation. With a short relaxation period and freshen up the boys had a training session which was good in parts and formed a base for the much awaited game on Wednesday.

Everyone is extremely tired but in high spirits and is looking forward to a good night's sleep!

SATURDAY 18 JULY

1805 hrs Meet at LONDON HEATHROW AIRPORT, Terminal 1, where a representative from Edwin Doran Sports Travel will assist you to check-in to Air New Zealand flight NZ038 to AUCKLAND via HONG KONG.

2105 hrs Flight departs (flying time 11 hrs 45 mins).

Overnight in flight.


SUNDAY 19 JULY

1550 hrs Arrive Hong Kong Airport and remain in transit for 2 hrs 20 mins after which you will re-board flight NZ038.

1810 hrs Flight departs to Auckland (flying time 10 hrs 50 mins).

Overnight in flight.


MONDAY 20 JULY

0900 hrs Arrive Auckland Airport and clear New Zealand Immigration and Passport Control, collect your luggage and pass through Customs.

You will then meet by Hamish Morison, your local representative, who will escort you to your coach which will stay with you for the whole of the North Island.

1000 hrs Transfer to the EDEN PARK STADIUM.

1100 hrs Arrive at Eden Park Stadium where you will have a guided tour lasting approximately 1½ hrs. Transfer to your hotel where you will be based for one night on a bed and breakfast basis.

After the tour there will be chance for you to stop and have some lunch (not included).

Arrive at the Kingsgate Hotel where you will be based for three nights on a bed and breakfast basis.

Perhaps take a trip up the Sky Tower this morning which towers over the city for fabulous views of the surrounding area.

Later this afternoon arrive back at Dilworth where you will have some lunch.

Rotorua is nicknamed ‘Sulphur City’ as it has the most energetic thermal activity in the country with bubbling mud pools, gurgling hot springs and gushing geysers.

1500 hrs Visit the mud pools, steaming hot springs and the famous Pohutu Geyser in the Puia Thermal Reserve, which erupts at least once an hour and shoots hot water 20 metres into the air.

1800 hrs Your guide will arrive for your visit to the TAMAKI VILLAGE for a traditional concert and Hangi. This is a feast with food cooked in a traditional Maori underground oven, followed by a performance of Maori songs and dances.


FRIDAY 24 JULY

0730 hrs Breakfast.

0830 hrs Visit the Polynesian Spa with its hot mineral springs for a swim first thing this morning.

1100 hrs Return for breakfast before checking out and transferring to HASTINGS, in the Hawkes Bay area, where you will meet your next hosts from LINDISFARNE SCHOOL for a two night stay.

1200 hrs Arrive Taupo where you will be able to able to have a walk around the lake and have some early lunch (not included).

1330 hrs Depart Taupo.

1600 hrs Arrive Lindisfarne School where there is a possibility that you will be able to train before you meet you hosts and billeting is be arranged.

After the boys have gone home with their hosts the staff will transfer and check in to a nearby Cumberland Court Hotel for two nights.

1800 hrs Transfer by coach to NELSON where you will be able to spend some time and have chance to have some lunch (not included).

Christchurch is one of New Zealand’s most ‘English’ towns being named after the Oxford College and containing many English place names.

The city contains many parks, gardens and galleries and the surrounding beaches, lakes and Southern Alps offer a wonderful backdrop to the city.

On arrival you will meet your next hosts from SHIRLEY BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL where you will be based for three nights.

Today you will be with your hosts who will most probably have some activity arranged for you.

You might like to visit the Antarctic Centre, which recreates the atmosphere and environment of Antarctica, an interactive and fun experience of the ‘Great White South’.

The city’s heritage trams can take you on an inner city tour visiting sights such as Cathedral Square, the Southern Encounter Aquarium and the Avon River.

SUNDAY 02 AUGUST

This morning perhaps take the Christchurch gondola up to Mount Cavendish for some great views of the city and the Canterbury Plains.

0800 hrs Staff will come to the club to pick up the boys.

0830 hrs Boys arrive at the Geraldine Rugby Club to meet the staff.

0900 hrs Transfer to Timaru where you will be watching your under 14’s play.

0940 hrs Arrive in Timaru and meet up with the under 14’s squad.

You will all have time to spend in Timaru this morning before heading back to Monutainview High School to watch the match

11.45 pm MOUNTAINVIEW HIGH SCHOOL v WHITGIFT SCHOOL U-14

After your match transfer back to Geraldine where you will prepare for your match this evening.

3.00 pm GERALDINE RFC v WHITGIFT SCHOOL U-17

After the match there will be chance to mingle with your opposition and there will be a post match function.



UNDER 14’s

0800 hrs Staff will come to the school to meet the boys.

0830 hrs The boys arrive at school with their hosts.

0940 hrs You will meet up with the under 17 squad who will be arriving this morning from just up the road in Geraldine.

Arrive back at the school and prepare for your match.

11.45 am MOUNTAINVIEW HIGH SCHOOL v WHITGIFT SCHOOL U-14

After the match transfer to Geraldine where you will watch and support the under 17’s.

3.00 pm GERALDINE RFC v WHITGIFT SCHOOL U-17

After the match transfer back to Timaru and go home with your hosts.











WEDNESDAY 05 AUGUST

0730 hrs Staff will check out of their hotel and transfer to meet the boys.

0800 hrs Boys will come to school with their hosts at the beginning of the school day.

0830 hrs Say goodbye to your hosts early this morning and transfer by coach to QUEENSTOWN, through the stunning scenery of the Southern Alps, a journey of around 6 hrs.

1430 hrs Arrive at the Queenstown Lodge where you will be based in your hotel for two nights on a bed and breakfast basis.

Queenstown, known as the ‘Adventure Capital of the World’, is situated right on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, with the aptly named Remarkables and the Eyre Mountains giving the town a stunning backdrop.


THURSDAY 06 AUGUST

Today you can experience THE TRIPLE CHALLENGE.

0830 hrs Depart the hotel for the journey to Cavells Rafting Lodge where you will change into your wet suits before setting off to Frankton Marina.

1000 hrs Board the Twin Rivers Jet for 30 mins of fun on the river.

Once back on dry land transfer to the Helicopter Line Depot at Queenstown Airport.

1050 hrs Board your helicopters for the scenic flight which will conveniently take you to the river ready for your rafting.

1115 hrs ‘Cast off’ and head down the river for an hour of running the rapids. At the end of your rafting experience, transfer back to Cavells Rafting Lodge.

1245 hrs Time for a hot shower, saunas and snacks.

1330 hrs Arrive back at the hotel.

Afternoon Free to sightsee as you please.

Evening At leisure.








FRIDAY 07 AUGUST

1000 hrs Check out of your hotel and store your bags in Reception; you will have the rest of the day to relax in Queenstown.

1415 hrs Transfer to QUEENSTOWN AIRPORT.

1445 hrs Check in to your flight NZ648 to AUCKLAND.

1645 hrs Flight departs (flying time 1 hr 45 mins).

1830 hrs Arrive Auckland Airport and connect with your onward flight NZ002 to LONDON via LOS ANGELES.

2130 hrs Flight departs (flying time 12 hrs 15 mins).

1445 hrs Arrive Los Angles Airport where you will remain in transit for 2 hrs.

1630 hrs Flight departs to London (flying time 10 hrs 30 mins).

Overnight in flight.


SATURDAY 08 AUGUST

1100 hrs Arrive London Heathrow Airport, Terminal 1, and clear UK Immigration and Passport Control, collect your luggage and pass through Customs before being free to disperse for home (own arrangements for getting to/from Heathrow Airport).
